Pakistanis
never eat mangoes at room temperature
-
In Pakistan, mangoes
are mostly eaten CHILLED. If you are in a hurry, a bath of cold water
(for
the mangoes!) is just what you need. Even if you really can’t
wait, you could try Pakistani mango milk shake by adding milk and ice cubes
to the pulp and blend it.
-
Besides enhancing
the flavour of the Pakistani mangoes, chilling is believed to be able to
neutralize the "heat" inside the fruit?
-
By putting Pakistani
mangoes in the fridge, you can extend their shelf life. Once you remove
them from the fridge, you have to consume them that same day as they deteriorate
fast.
The season of Pakistani mangoes
begins in May till August
-
This means that
you could enjoy Pakistani mangoes for about four months. For the
die-hard mango fans, try freezing the mango pulp and you could still enjoy
the heavenly taste even when the season is over.
-
Chaunsa
is the golden temptation that has a slight perfume and weighs between 1/2
pound and 1 pound each, best eaten fresh.
-
Sindhri
is ideal for shakes and juice because of its low fibre content -- at 3%
to 5% compared to 27% of Chaunsa.
Pakistani
mangoes are rich in Vitamin A, C and D and other antioxidant vitamins
-
Besides, mangoes
have more carotenoids than most other fruits - and that helps ward off
colds and reduces the risk of cancer and heart disease.
-
Pakistani mangoes
are high in fibre, and contain a small amount of carbohydrates, calcium,
iron, potassium and a little protein.
Enjoying fresh Pakistani
mangoes need not be messy
Here are
some
fun ways to eat a fresh mango:
-
Squeeze the mango
gently until it's soft. Poke or bite a small hole at the top end
and suck out the mango pulp. This is
easier than you think!
-
Slice the two
sides off, leaving the pip in the middle. Score the flesh by cutting lines
lengthwise and widthwise, like a grid. Take care not to cut through the
skin. Hold it up with both hands and push the skin side up and out. You
now have cubes attached to the skin and can eat the mango off the skin.
-
Cut a cross at
the base of the mango, until the knife touches the pip. Peel the skin back
and hold the covered part while you eat the flesh from the top, like peeling
a banana.
-
Peel, dice and
eat with a fork, spoon, or toothpick.
There are hundred and one
ways to enjoy Pakistani mangoes
Some of
the
most delicious ways are:
-
mango chutney!
-
mango salad!
-
mango custard!
-
mango cheesecake!
-
mango
pie!
